I'm Jen McGinley, a Designer for Performance from, and currently, based in Glasgow.
I graduated in 2015 with a BA(Hons) in Theatre Design from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Later that year, I was named one of the winners of the Linbury Prize for Stage Design (more about that here).
I began my career as an assistant to designers Es Devlin and Tom Scutt, on productions in London venues such as the Donmar Warehouse, National Theatre, and Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. I then started designing my own shows and began working around the UK. So far, I've worked with companies such as the Citizens Theatre, Northern Stage, Derby Theatre, New Diorama, and the Royal Lyceum Theatre. In 2022, I designed the first Shakespearean show in the Cockpit Theatre of the new Shakespeare North Playhouse with Not Too Tame.
Working in an environmentally sustainable way is also of huge importance to me. My work with the National Theatre of Scotland using the Theatre Green Book on The Enemy was recently used as a case study at the Theatres Trust Conference, and I have worked with this model on many shows since.
I've recently completed my Masters of Science in 3D Design for Virtual Environments at Glasgow Caledonian University. Over the year, I gained skills including 3D printing, photogrammetry & digital modelling. My dissertation was on the use of digital modelling in Theatre Design and the use of LiDAR scanning to create digital model boxes. More about this will be on my website soon!
